PREFACE TO THE SECOND EDITION.

The first Edition has been carefully revised.

In the preparation of this book the object aimed at has been to put into the hands of Students a selected list of about 4,000 of the Chinese Characters which are most useful in studying the Japanese language. Any- one mastering - the characters given will be able to read the columns of the Japanese press with ease.

The following method of using the book has been suggested by some- one who asserts that it has proved of advantage to a number of people. The student adopting it will, at the end of two years, have no difficulty in writing to dictation, or giving the meanings of, all the characters contained in this work.

Begin with the first character, copy it out, using a Japanese pen, and

' Sw- atter writing -it several times, , cover the character in the book with a slip

of paper, and then rewrite it from memory, looking only at the Chinese sounds and English and Japanese meanings. Again, copy out the second character, forming it from memory in the same way, and afterwards go back to the first. Continue to repeat all the characters until the first page has been learnt. Then reverse the order, and learning the meanings and Japanese readings of the characters, endeavour to repeat them, looking only at the characters. Next day commit the second page to memory in

a similar fashion, and subsequently return to the first page, merely tracing the characters this time with the finger. Continue to go over daily all that has previously been done, till ten pages have been studied, and after that omit one page each day, repeating however all the pages omitted at least once a week until the book is finished.

Of course for the practical use of the characters the student must read some standard books, such as the Government readers, and the newspapers.

I have to thank R. J. Kirby Esq. of Tokio for his kindness in revising the proof sheets.
